Deepika Padukone will play Romi Bhatia, Kapil Dev’s wife, in the movie of India’s historic Prudential Cup title triumph. Deepika will also be a co-producer for Kabir Khan’s ’83.
The film’s crew and cast are already in England for the shoot. Deepika confesses that she readily agreed to Kabir Khan’s offer for the role opposite husband Ranveer Singh.
“I am so glad that Kabir came to me with it (the role). This happened a couple of months ago, when he was still casting the boys for the film. It’s just that I was busy with Chhappak (her production debut) and we were waiting for the right moment to make the announcement,” the Bollywood actress has told Delhi Times.
Deepika and Ranveer will pair up for the ’83 for the first time since their marriage. “If it were not Ranveer as Kapil Dev, I would have still done my part,” Deepika has told the paper.
Ranveer is playing the World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev. He along with the other mail cast, who play different members of the Kapil’s Devils of 1983, have worked hard to study and emulate the iconic cricketers. The actors have spent quality time with the cricketers both on and off the field to understand finer points of the game and characteristics of the real heroes for portraying them on screen.
Deepika, however, is not going to spend much time with Romi to understand her perspective for the role since she has known Mrs Dev for long. Though she does intend to meet her before starting the shoot.
