The Union Government has reportedly given an in-principle go-ahead for the Indian tennis team to travel to Pakistan for their Davis Cup tie, to be played in Islamabad in September.
“I have heard that (permission to apply for visas to play the Asia/Oceania Zone Group I tie), yes,” The New Indian Express has quoted an anonymous All India Tennis Association (AITA) official as saying.
The AITA will now announce the squad to set the visa process rolling.
There is also no clarity on Mahesh Bhupathi and Zeesan Ali, the captain and coach respectively. Their term had come to an end with the home tie against Italy in February this year. The duo, however, will get another team in all likelihood.
The winner of the India-Pakistan tie will earn the ticket for the Davis Cup qualifiers, slated for early next year.
India will be playing a Davis Cup tie in Pakistan after 55 years.
