This news will end all hopes of the International Cricket Council (ICC) to host the T20 World Cup edition in Australia this year. And at the same time Indian Premier League fans can rejoice, as IPL 2020 is ready to get a new lifeline.
The ICC’S & Cricket Australia’s remote hopes of hosting T20 World Cup this year has suffered a huge jolt as the state of Victoria & capital Melbourne has once again seen spike in the cases of Covid19. This has resulted in Australia’s top soccer league, A-League and National Rugby League to move all the matches out of Melbourne next month.
Cricket Australia & ICC’s hopes dashed
In the last two weeks T20 World Cup hopes saw a little revival after the announcement of Australian PM that from July 15th, ‘Australian stadiums can see return of fans to 25% of its capacity’.
So successful was Australia’s containment of the virus that last week management of Perth Optus stadium announced, that ‘capacity crowd of 60,000 can comeback for the games by 15th July’.
But now all those hopes have been dashed with fresh burst of virus cases in the state of Victoria that has led to the decision to move out the games out of Melbourne
InsideSport reached out to Cricket Australia’s for their official take on this alarming development but despite repeated attempts did not get any reply.
Will ICC now make announcement on the T20 World Cup ?
The iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) is slated to host 7 World Cup games including the finals. As now with fresh outbreak in the state, authorities are bound to further restrict the international moment and that will be death knell for T20 World Cup this year.
ICC has been sitting on the decision on T20 World Cup’s fate since last two months in a hope that the tournament can go ahead if things improve.
But with this development all those hopes are dashed. Will ICC take a final call now ?
New lifeline for IPL 2020 !
As it is the case of either – or between the T20 World Cup and IPL 2020, the later along with BCCI can breathe little easy. Despite of ICC’s dilly delaying tactics now they will be further under pressure to announce the postponement of the T20 World Cup.
As soon that happens, it will give new lifeline to IPL 2020.
Now the ball is in the ICC’S court. If they still sit on the pending decision – BCCI will have every right to feel that IPL 2020 is being ’sabotaged’ as few alleged.
