Vinesh Phogat has won the women’s 50 kg category gold at the 18th Asian Games in Jakarta today (Monday). This is also India’s second gold from the Asian Games 2018 after male Yodha Bajrang Punia had triumphed in the men’s 65 kg freestyle wrestling yesterday (Sunday).
Vinesh with her flawless show also became India’s first female wrestler to win an Asian Games gold medal. She dominated her final against Japan’s Yuki Iri for a 6-2 verdict. The Indian girl has been in tremendous form all through the day.
Vinesh, like Bajrang, had left for Jakarta with a promise to return with the gold. Also, like her Haryana State-mate Bajrang, the young girl has fulfilled her promise.
Earlier, in the semi-final, Vinesh has outplayed Daulatbike Yakshimuratova of Uzbekistan 10-0 on technical superiority in a mere 75 seconds.
Vinesh was on a role in Jakarta as she had routed South Korea’s Kim Hyungjoo 11-0 in the quarter-finals, after defeating China’s Sun Yanan by technical superiority 8-2 in the round of 16.
The Tata Motors Commercial Vehicle-powered wrestling by far has been India’s biggest strength in Jakarta, with the only two gold by far coming from Bajran Punia and Vinesh.
There are more hopes from the mat as women’s events will continue tomorrow (Tuesday) as well with the Greco Roman competition yet to follow.
