The wrestling world was eagerly waiting for the new dates of the Asian Olympic Qualifiers and the first update about the postponed event has come from a unexpected quarter.
Though the world governing body of the sport, United World Wrestling is yet to issue new dates or any update on the Asian Qualifiers, the Iran Wrestling Federation has reported on its official website that the Olympic quota event for Asian wrestlers will now be held in April, states a report by www.wrestlingtv.in.
Iran Wrestling official website, iawf.ir, has reported that during a call the UWW officials have confirmed that the Asian Qualifiers will now take place from April 8 to 10. The report further states that the venue for the Asian Olympic Qualifiers is still not decided. UWW will confirm the venue later.
It is worth noting that due to the Coronavirus menace around the globe, the Asian Olympic Qualifiers were first shifted out of Xi’an, China, to Bishkek in Kyrgyzstan, where the event was scheduled for March 27 to 29. But the Kyrgyzstan Government had advised national sports federations against hosting any international events in wake of the deadly Coronavirus spread.
The deadly disease, which started from the Wuhan province in China, has spread to more than 60 countries worldwide, with more than 93,000 confirmed cases and the death toll rising to 3,200.
Many of the Asian countries including Iran, China, Japan and South Korea are grappling with issues related to Covid-19, which led to an intervention by UWW.
The world body is yet to make formal announcement on the new dates, which in all possibility will only be made once the host for the Asian Qualifiers are finalized. It is also important to note that the last world Olympic qualifying event for wrestlers, the World Olympic Qualifiers are scheduled for April 30 to May 3 in Sofia, Bulgaria, and all the continental qualifiers have to be completed before the quotas for the world qualifiers are released and finalized.
