Australian Open 2021: Stefanos Tsitsipas overpowers Rafael Nadal in five-set thriller to reach semifinal- Fifth-seeded Tsitsipas on Wednesday stunned the World No.2 Rafa Nadal to enter the semifinal of the Australian Open 2021. Tsitsipas came back to win three straight sets after losing the first two sets. The scorecard ended 3-6, 2-6, 7-6, 6-4, 7-5 in favour of the Greek professional.

The Spaniard was seen at his impeccable best in the first set and this forced Tsitsipas to play catch-up and in the end, Nadal stormed to an easy 6-3 win.

A similar story unfolded in the second set and Nadal carried on with his momentum, winning the second set 6-2 and as a result, the world number two was just one more set away from progressing to the semi-finals.

Tsitsipas provided more of a challenge in the third set, and it went into a tie-breaker, and the Greek managed to win it, sending the match into the fourth set.

The Greek then continued with his momentum and he made a charge in the fourth set, winning it 6-4 and as a result, the match went into the fifth and final set.

With everything to play for in the final set, both Nadal and Tsitsipas put on a masterclass and in the end, Tsitsipas managed to emerge triumphant, sending the Spaniard out of the tournament.

With the loss, Rafael Nadal’s hopes of beating Roger’s Federer’s record (20 Grand Slams) has come to an end. He is currently equal with the Swiss Tennis Maestro. Nadal, 34, has only one Australian Open title (2009) to his name.

Tsitsipas will meet Daniil Medvedev in the second semifinals of the Australian Open 2021. The match will be played on Friday.

The 22-year-old will be aiming for his first breakthrough in the Grand Slam tournaments.

The first semifinal will be played on Thursday between Novak Djokovic and Aslan Karatsev. In women’s singles, Naomi Osaka will face Serena Williams while K Muchova will be up against Jennifer Brady in the semifinals.

The matches will kick off at 8.30 AM and 2 PM IST on Sony Sports Network– SONY SIX, SONY TEN2, SONY TEN3, and OTT platform SONY SIX.
