BAN vs SL: From Karunaratne to Mendis, four debutants to watch out for from Sri Lanka squad- Sri Lanka will take on Bangladesh in a three-match ODI series starting from May 23. All these matches will be played at the Shere Bangla National Stadium, Dhaka. Sri Lanka are going with a new-look team with a new captain Kusal Perera to lead the side with four players — Ramesh Mendis, Chamika Karunaratne, Shiran Fernando and Binura Fernando who will make their debuts.
Sri Lanka are currently ranked 9th in the ICC One Day International rankings while Bangladesh is placed at 7th spot. In their last ODI series, Sri Lanka were thrashed by West Indies 3-0. While Bangladesh were also white-washed by New Zealand in a three-match ODI series.
For the Bangladesh series, Sri Lanka is banking on four debutants to perform. InsideSport takes you through four debutants who could set the stage on fire for Sri Lanka.
Ramesh Mendis was part of Sri Lanka’s squad for the 2014 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup. He made his international debut for Sri Lanka in January 2021. He was named as a reserve player for Sri Lanka’s Test series against England before making his in the 2nd Test. During the second Test against Bangladesh in 2021, the all-rounder returned with bowling figures of 2/86 and 4/103 while scored 16 runs. Ramesh Mendis is expected to deliver against Bangladesh with his off-break bowling.
Chamika made his Test debut for the Sri Lanka cricket team in February 2019. However, he could not live up to the expectation as he picked up only one wicket in the debut match. Chamika has the ability to clock 140 KMPH on regular basis with his strong shoulders and past experience of javelin throw. All eyes will be on him for the Bangladesh series.
Many cricket experts say that Binura Fernando is a better version of Sri Lanka’s legendary bowler Chaminda Vaas. The 6 foot 6 inch-lad comes from the capital of Sri Lanka and is well known for his ability to extract extra bounce on any wicket. Binura came under life light after his impressive show at the Under 19 World Cup in 2014 which helped him earn him a spot in the Test series against Pakistan in 2014. However, he is yet to make his ODI and Test debut. In the two T20I, he has played the left-arm pacer picked three wickets.
Shiran Fernando made his first-class debut for Lankan Cricket Club in the 2016–17 Premier League Tournament on 9 December 2016. He was named in Sri Lanka’s squad for the 2019 ACC Emerging Teams Asia Cup in Bangladesh. Now as he is named in Sri Lanka’s One Day International squad for their series against Bangladesh, all eyes will be on the 28-year-old.
