India completed a clean sweep in the two-Test series against Bangladesh – none of the Tests going into the fourth day. Both the victory’s acts are performed during Week 47 (November 16 to 22) of the Broadcast Audience Research Council television viewership rating charts. And, the host broadcaster will have little to celebrate.
There have been numerous positives to count from India’s emphatic wins – Virat Kohli’s epochal acts with the willow, Indian new ball bowlers sending shivers through the spines of the batsmen, the historic ‘Pink Ball’ Test bringing the crowd back to the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. But nothing worth ensuring Test cricket to be a commodity worth crores of rupees broadcaster has committed for the media rights in a territory where international cricket involving the Indian national team was once perceived to be the best sports television business property.
No more the same. If it’s not limited-overs cricket, it fails to invoke the consumer (read audience) interest worth its high commercial values.
The LIVE content of the first and second Test match between India and Bangladesh, including the pre- , post- and mid-innings analysis, occupies the top five positions for the most-watched sports shows for the week. But the gross impressions have fallen drastically.

Among the most-watched channels, Sony Ten 3 has made significant gains to jump into the No. 2 position, behind Star Sports 1 Hindi, which despite being the genre leader has lost more than 50% eyeballs as LIVE cricket changed from the shorter form to the conventional format.

In the coming week, there is no major cricket content on Indian sports channels except for the Indian domestic cricket, foreign international series and Cricket South Africa’s Mzansi Super League. This will put the Indian Super League to a litmus test as a broadcast commercial property. It will be interesting to see how ISL fares when it has little competition in terms of broadcast ratings.
