BARC Ratings: India-West Indies T20I boosts sports genre, Star ratings

There cannot be a better recipe for grand sports television ratings in India than Virat Kohli leading the Men in Blues in a successful 200+ chase in a T20 Internationals.

The first T20 International between India and the West Indies on December 6, when skipper Kohli led the home team’s chase of a 208-run target with an unbeaten 94, has come as a much-needed boost for the sports genre in the Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) of India ratings for week 49 (November 30 to December 6).

All the top five sports genre programmes for the week are LIVE broadcast of the match on Star Sports Hindi (No. 1), DD Sports (N0. 2) and Star Sports 1 (N0. 5) and the post- and pre-match analysis on Star Sports 1 Hindi.

Star Sports 1 Hindi as the most watched channel in the genre made more than 60% gain over the previous week to top the table with 15,18,15,000 impressions. DD Sports too rode the popularity of the match and the format to jump into the top five to climb to the third position behind Star Spots First.

Star Sports’ and DD Sports’ gains however became the loss of Sony Ten 3 and Sony Ten 1 with both the channels losing out considerably in the position and eyeballs but still managing to settle in the fourth and fifth position respectively.

In the coming week, Star Sports will be in for a major gain as the ratings will have into consideration the LIVE broadcast of the second and the third T20 Internationals between India and the West Indies, including the whirlwind knocks of Rohit Sharma, Kohli and Rahul which set up India’s huge win in the three-match series decider.
