The LIVE broadcast of the first Test match between India and Bangladesh, comprehensively won by the hosts at Indore last week, finds a place among the most-watched sports genre shows on Indian television. However, the Broadcast Audience Research Council sports genre television ratings for Week 46 (November 9 to 15) expose the yawning gap between the acceptance for the shorter-format white ball cricket and the traditional Test matches.
There is an unbelievable 700% difference between the gross impressions for the respective LIVE broadcast slots recorded among the top five most watched sports genre shows for the week.
The Hindi broadcast of the 3rd T20 International between India and Bangladesh as the number one show for the week has recorded 1,59,80,000 impressions on Star Sports 1 Hindi. Whereas the best performing slot for the Test, also on the same channel, has 21,58,000 impressions – an unbelievable over 700% difference. Still, the T20I simulcast on DD Sports in the second position with 70,91,000 impressions is not being taken into consideration here.
If that’s not enough to highlight the popularity of the T20 Internationals, the post-match review show has had better audience ratings than LIVE Test cricket.

There is no change in the respective positions of the most-watched sports genre shows. However, Star Sports 1 Hindi and DD Sports in the first two positions have marginally lost out in gross impressions, another testimony to the fact that there are few buyers for the conventional cricket.
Star Sports First in the third positon though has made symbolic gain, whereas Sony Ten 3 and Sony Ten 1 continue to hold on to the fourth and fifth position respectively.

The ratings next week will also be the preliminary parameter to determine the future of the Day Night Test cricket on Indian television India.
Next week may bring more deficit for Star Sports 1 Hindi as the ratings period will have only two days of LIVE cricket with Team India in white flannels – the third, last day and the decisive day of the Indore Test and the first day of the historic Day Night Pink Ball Test at the Eden Gardens, starting tomorrow (Friday).
