The ICC World Cup 2019 is being played in England and Wales. But the World Cup business is more about the Virat Kohli-led Indians than the hosts or any of the nine other teams in fray in the May 30-July 14 competition.
The India-Bangladesh match on May 25 at the Kennington Oval, London, was the most sold out among all the ten warm-up games in run up to the ICC World Cup 2019. The match has also been the most-watched on television not just among the unofficial preparatory games, but also host England’s World Cup 2019 opener against South Africa at the same venue on May 30.
The India-Bangladesh warm-up match happens to be the most watched sports genre programme of Week 22 (May 25-31) on the Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) television audience ratings chart. The Indian audience during the week have also watched the Pakistan-West Indies World Cup tie more than the inaugural tie between hosts England and South Africa.
The quality LIVE cricket content has put the sports genre ratings back on track following a one poor week after the Indian Premier League when the broadcaster had precious little to offer in term of LIVE and cricket content. The phenomenon of Star Sports 1 Hindi and LIVE cricket is back on the BARC ratings chart for the most-watched sports genre shows for the week.

Star Sports 1 Hindi has gained over 300% impressions on the back of just the ICC World Cup 2019 warm up games and the first two competition matches on May 30 and 31 to return as the most-watched sports channel in India. Star Sports First moves down to the second position in spite of gaining in impressions. The gross impressions for the week have improved for each of the top five positions in BARC’s Top 5 most-watched sports channels list, which has Star Sports 2, Star 1 and Sony Ten 1 in the third to fifth position respectively.

The Star Sports 1 Hindi and cricket content as going to be the kings over the next few weeks as the World Cup 2019 momentum picks up further. The next week ratings will also feature the start of India’s World Cup campaign with a win over South Africa at the Rose Bowl, Southampton, on June 5. A new high for the sports genre ratings on Indian television cannot be ruled out over the next few weeks.
