Barcagate: In a shocking turn of events, former FC Barcelona President was arrested by the Mossos d’Esquadra (Catalonia Police) on Monday morning. The police conducted a search and seizure on Monday at the club premises in Barcelona in relation to the Barcagate scandal. Apart from him, former CEO Oscar Grau and legal chief Roman Gomez Ponti were also arrested from Camp Nou and were taken to a local police station.

During his time as the president of the club, Bartomeu allegedly contracted a marketing agency called I3 Ventures to monitor and players’ social media activities. The company was asked to post negative comments on players, who would criticize Bartomeu and boost the club officials’ image. Some current players of the club are also included.

In the summer of 2020, a Barcelona court ordered the police to visit the club offices and continue to investigate the allegations. However, an external audit had ruled out Bartomeu or his board’s role in the scandal, known as Barcagate.

But the judicial proceedings opened after a judge at the 13th Barcelona investigating court, accepted Dignitat Blaugrana platform’s complaint. Bartomeu and his board had denied the allegations. However, he stepped down from his post in October amid intense criticism and scrutiny. A vote of no confidence was also brought against him but he resigned before that.
