Sourav Ganguly on why Team India is best in business: The Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) authority has been extended tremendously in the last few years, becoming the most powerful cricket board in the world. However, it is not just down to administrative efficiency. The biggest reason is Virat Kohli & Co’s excellent performance on the pitch. Gone are those days when Team India was called the home track bully. Under Virat Kohli’s captaincy, India have become a strong side even in overseas condition, defeating Australia twice in their own backyard and bullying World No 1 England at home, winning all three series. BCCI President Sourav Ganguly said that it is down to 5 reasons including IPL why the Indian Team is the best in business and achieved what the team could not under his captaincy.

“The system is strong – domestic cricket, NCA (National Cricket Academy), coaches. The IPL is also a reason. Fairness of selection; only the best gets picked. There is transparency. The cricket system is robust. Four-day and T20 (cricket) are different, but the IPL does help. Gives confidence that you can play at this level. Talent is important and adjustment is not a problem,” Sourav Ganguly told The Hindu.

1) The system is strong – domestic cricket: The primary reason is a robust domestic structure with over nearly 30 matches a season (First-Class and limited-overs combined). The Ranji Trophy continues to churn out players like Mohammed Siraj, Mayank Agarwal and KL Rahul, who play for the state teams against equally strong oppositions like Cheteshwar Pujara’s Saurashtra or Ajinkya Rahane’s Mumbai.

2) NCA (National Cricket Academy): Over the last decade, the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru has grown tremendously. Working hand-in-hand with the MRF Pace Academy, the NCA has churned out pacers like Navdeep Saini, Mohammed Siraj, Khaleel Ahmed and others. Currently, under the tutelage of Rahul Dravid, it is likely to grow more in the coming days.

3) Top Class coaches: Not just the senior men’s team coach but at every age-group level, BCCI has employed coaches who are world-class. If Rahul Dravid had overseen the India A and U-19 team, coaches like Bharat Arun, WV Raman, Ravi Shastri have nurtured young talents. At the grassroots, there are several former First-Class and international cricketers who are nurturing budding talents while at state levels, they get the guidance of international coaches like Dav Wahtamore (Kerala coach).

4) IPL also a big reason: Probably the biggest reason of it all is the Indian Premier League (IPL). Since its launch in 2008, it has become the trademark of BCCI’s success and a primary reason for India’s deep pool of talent. As the scouts from IPL franchises track the performance of cricketers in domestic games, players are eager to showcase their talent and earn fat cheques from the IPL auction.

Cricketers like Sanju Samson, Hardik Pandya, Krunal Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah and now Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan have all come through the IPL. In their respective franchises, they are guided by international coaches and former international stars as mentors to correct their mistakes. It has helped immensely, taking the fear factor out of cricketers like Suryakumar Yadav.

5) Indian cricketers very talented: There is no doubt that India has a great talent pool. Playing two bilateral series simultaneously is one prime example. The team that will go to England to play Test and the one that will go to Sri Lanka will not have a great difference in talent. With cricket culture being a reason and stardom being the other, youngsters give their best to learn the nitty-gritty of the game and compete at the highest level.

“These are two different generations. This is a superb phase. We drew with Australia in Australia, beat England in England and Pakistan in Pakistan. Won in New Zealand, too. It was a glorious phase. This team is doing so well. I leave it at that. What happened in 2003, can’t be compared with 2021. I was involved both times – captain and now the BCCI president,” Sourav Ganguly concluded.
