BookMyShow eyes expansion, targets stake in sports leagues: Report

BookMyShow, India’s largest ticketing website, is looking for expansion of its business in sports leagues. The company is eyeing partnerships to creates sports leagues and bringing properties like the National Basketball League to India.

BookMyShow, in the business of sports and entertainment tickets digital sales, is targeting to expand its revenue from the sports business by up to 300%, a top company executive has told business daily Economic Times.

The company has been selling tickets of the top Indian Premier League teams like Mumbai Indians, Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders.

“We have sold tickets of sporting events worth ₹1,000 crore in three years from 2016 to 2018, whereas this year, in the first six months alone, the number is ₹350 crore. We see this growing three times in the next two years,” BookMyShow COO, Live Entertainment Albert Almeida has told Economic Times.

The company, according to Almeida, has also grown its international sports offerings three times, accounting for 30% of its total revenue share.

BookMyShow is also working for expanding its business to other sports disciplines like football, wrestling, martial arts and marathons. “There’s a lot happening in this space. We are looking for suitable partners, who think like us and are willing to invest. We are happy to build a league together and replicate some of the success,” says Almeida.

BookMyShow has also come on board as promoter of the first and upcoming pre-season game in India between Indiana Pacers and Sacramento Kings on October 5 at NSCI Dome in Worli, Mumbai.

“Sports is really a critical piece for our business and we have got one team dedicated to building sports and sports related partnerships. We’re looking at key partnerships, which are a little more strategic, which move beyond just ticketing business,” he said, hinting towards partnership with NBA.

“This partnership is far more strategic. Together, we’ve actually made the whole commercial model work in a way that they can bring a game here. We are promoters to the first official pre-season game, which will be played in India. This game will be broadcast as part of the official broadcast of the NBA. So, it’ll be available live to viewers in India and 200 other countries around the world,” Almeida told the daily.

With regard to cricket leagues, the company has also started working with domestic leagues and recently ticketed and managed ground operations for the T20 Mumbai League. Earlier, it was ticketing partner for the Karnataka Premier League in 2017 and Tamil Nadu Premier League in 2018.
