The Union Cabinet approved the revamped ‘Khelo India-National Programmer for Development of Sports’ scheme. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the vision behind the programme to create a sports culture and establish India as a sporting nation, chaired the meeting.
Sports for All and Sports for Excellence are two prime goals of the programme. The plan also aims at impacting the entire sporting ecosystem, with wide-ranging interventions.
The revamped plan has an estimated outlay of INR 1,756 crore for the 2017-18 and 2019-20 period. The program also aims at mainstreaming sport as a tool for individual and community development.
Athlete picked to benefit from the scheme will be paid an annual scholarship of INR 5 lakh for eight years. Besides, 20 universities across India will be promoted as hubs of sporting excellence.
The program under a nationwide physical fitness drive will also cover about 200 million children in the 10-18 age group. The program will also cover 20 universities across the country to promote as hubs of sporting excellence.
It will aim at creating an active population with a healthy lifestyle.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had earlier made his intentions clear of improving the condition of sports in India. Sports Minister Rajyawardhan Singh Rathore had then said that as per his idea, soon a plan “Khelo India” would be prepared and put up in the cabinet for discussion and approval.
