Chennai Super Kings will retain their skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni and veteran middle-order batsman Suresh Raina for eight seasons.
The Indian Premier League franchisees management has reached a consensus to retain the veteran duo. However, no decision is made on the choice to retain the third player. The franchisee have time till January 4 to submit the retained players list to the Board of Control for Cricket in India.
“The (CSK) management has made a decision to retain Dhoni and Raina,” CSK director George John told insidesport.co. “We have time till January 4 to decide on the third name. But we are not sure about it as of now as there is also an option to get up to three players from out previous during the auction as we will have right match.”
Raina has been out of favour with the national selectors. He has also struggled to translate his class into runs in the current domestic season. However, The left-hander was the first choice for the team management after skipper Dhoni.
“The decision to retain Raina is taken in consultation and with the approval of Dhoni,” a senior management source in CSK told insidesport.co. The team management is likely to pick either R Ashwin or Ravindra Jadeja as the third retention before the January 4 deadline, the source said.
Raina’s tremendous performance for CSK over the years has made him the first choice for the team after retaining captain cool. The 31-year-old has been the highest run-getter in the league with 4,540 runs at an average of 34.14 and a strike rate of 139.09.
CSK will be making a comeback following a two-year suspension as an all-new IPL Season kick starts next year.
