The Bangladesh tour of Sri Lanka is hanging by a thread. The both sides i.e Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) and Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) have tried their best to move forward on the tour but things still remain standstill and undecided.
BCB is still waiting for SLC’s positive response on reducing the quarantine norms for the Bangladesh team before they board for Colombo to play the three-match Test series. BCB president Nazmul Hasan last week had said that the Bangladesh national team won’t tour Sri Lanka if the conditions are not eased and his threat to pull out from the series prompted SLC to try and renegotiate the conditions with its health authorities.
The chairman of media and communication committee of BCB Jalal Younus said “We’re yet to get a response from SLC. But as we understand, this matter is beyond SLC’s control. A special task force oversees the Covid-19 situation in Sri Lanka. If they allow us to tour the country with a shorter quarantine period, they’ll inform SLC and then they’ll tell us about it. What we have asked them is to ensure a shorter quarantine period and allow us to train during that period,”
Bangladesh tour of Sri Lanka : SLC trying to convince local task force to reduce quarantine norms
SLC on their part is trying to convince the local health authorities but hasn’t succeeded much. Hence there is a huge question mark on the proposed tour. SLC vice-president Ravin Wickramaratne told cricket website Cricinfo that they have very little room to go against the task force’s call.
‘We had a positive meeting with the COVID-19 task force yesterday [Tuesday] and everyone was in agreement that we should make this tour happen. But we have to take what the doctors are saying into account also,’.
But it is unlikely that local health authorities in Sri Lanka will alter their stand. BCB meanwhile is getting ready for any eventuality.
‘We are ready. If any positive reply comes, we could be ready in a week. That will not be a problem. But if they make too much delay than that could be a problem.’
In case the tour gets cancelled, SLC will get in trouble as the payments due from the broadcaster and the sponsors will be put on hold.
