Cricket continues to dominate sports genre, Star Sports maintain its spots

Cricket sells the most when Virat kohli and Company are in action. The week 39 (September 23-29, 2017) sports genre data for Broadcast Audience Research Council ratings further strengthen this belief. The India-Australia series third and fourth one-day internationals have once again established Star Sports and cricket as undisputed leaders in Indian television sports genre broadcast. Kabaddi comes next as there is no other cricket show to challenge or press for the fifth position in the top five sports programmes table.

Star network channels and cricket shows have yet again captured four of the top-five positions apiece in the Week 39 (Saturday, September 23 to Friday, September 29) BARC data. The Pro Kabaddi League and Star Sports First manage to maintain their position in the top-five table for the week.

The first-four positions in the top-five sports programmes table are shared by the third and fourth one-day internationals between India and Australia with the Hindi broadcast taking the top two slots. Riding on the sport’s attraction in rural India and deep reach of free to air Star Sports First, PKL has also been able to stay at the No. 5 position for one more week.

As per the data, cricket’s Hindi language broadcast has also continued to attract more viewers than for the simulcast in English. However, the fourth ODI, the only match that Indian team lost to Kangaroos has witnessed a decline in viewership in comparison to the third ODI.

Star Sports 1 Hindi with a continued gain in viewership has again established itself as the sports genre leader with a healthy lead over second-placed Star Sports 1. The channel two week ago was placed second behind Star Sporst First, which for the first time ever since its launch went down to the No. 3 position, ahead of Sony Ten 1. Star Sports 2 has also maintained the bottom spot of the top-5 table for the week. However, there have been significant gains for every channel except for STAR Sports 2 with Sony Ten 1 registering almost over 65% gains from the last week data.

With the title race intensifying, Pro Kabaddi League will now enter a more interesting phase. Although the next week data will only have the fifth ODI in the slots, the following week will have more entertaining and thrilling T20Is to challenge the sport of Kabaddi. With FIFA U-17 being hosted in India, the challenge will become much greater for Kabaddi to maintain the top 5 spot. The upcoming scenario will also bring a healthy competition for the broadcasters as well where Star has been consolidating its domination for the past three weeks.
