This is the story of a man and a woman. Both of who are, hopefully, knocking the doors of stardom. If they continue the path of success in their chosen sport, brands could soon be lining up to associate with their names. Sports lovers already know about their exploits on the field while brands take their time to study them.
Names, did we say? It is only one – Harmanpreet.
If there is one name that is already catching the attention of India’s cricket followers, tracking Australia’s Women’s Big Bash League, it is Harmanpreet Kaur. The Indian women’s T20 captain smashed 47 off 28 balls, including two fours and three sixes, in her debut match for Sydney Thunders. Kaur has become the first Indian woman to play for an overseas T20 league. The 27-year-old led India to their sixth Asian T20 title last week.
According to ESPNCricinfo, Harmanpreet Kaul Bhullar has played two test matches and 58 one day internationals for India and has two hundreds in the 50-over format of the game with a combative average of 33.77. With nine wickets in her two test matches and 12 in the ODIs, she chips in with the ball too. She had taken over as the captain of India in the Asia Cup, which the Indian women won for the sixth consecutive time.
The other Harmanpreet is currently playing hockey for the Indian junior team in Lucknow and his drag flicks are making the opponents sit up and take notice. 20-year-old Singh’s partnership with Varun Kumar for drag flicks stood out as India beat England 5-3. He was part of India’s team at the Rio Olympics too. His role was critical as India won the trophy for the second time in 15 years, beating Australia in the semi-finals on the way.
Singh, hailing from Amritsar, Punjab and born in a family where farming is the main occupation, started playing hockey when he was 10. After joining a hockey academy in Jalandhar, he was hot property during the Hockey India league in 2015, being identified as the most promising player of the tournament.
As the two Harmanpreets are growing in the following, if their performances continue to improve, they could soon be poster boys for Indian sports. Who knows, association with brands could soon follow.
