IPL 2020 CSK vs RR Highlights: Buttler’s fifty keeps RR’s playoffs hopes alive; beats CSK by 7 wickets

Jos Buttler and Steve Smith played unbeaten knocks of 70 and 26 respectively as Rajasthan Royals (RR) defeated Chennai Super Kings (CSK) by seven wickets on Monday here at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi.

With this win, Steve Smith-led Royals has moved to the fifth position in the Indian Premier League (IPL) points table with 8 points from 10 matches while CSK is now languishing at the bottom with just six points.

Chasing 126, RR openers provided the side with a steady start as Ben Stokes and Robin Uthappa put on 26 runs for the first wicket. However, on the last ball of the third over, Deepak Chahar provided the much-needed breakthrough to CSK as he dismissed Stokes (19).

In the very next over, Uthappa also gifted his wicket as he tried to play a ramp shot, but the ball landed in the hands of CSK skipper MS Dhoni off the bowling of Josh Hazlewood. Dhoni was in action once again as he took a blinder of a catch off the bowling of Chahar to dismiss Sanju Samson (0), reducing RR to 28/3 in the 5th over.

Steve Smith and Jos Buttler then got together at the crease and the duo retrieved the innings for RR by forming an unbeaten stand of 98 runs. In the end, both batsmen took Royals over the line by seven wickets and 15 balls to spare

RR wins by 7 wickets

Jos Buttler and Steve Smith have done it. The duo have won the match for their team from a precarious position. RR takes two points and climbs out of the bottom to 7th position.

Second Strategic Timeout taken

RR-112/3 after 16 overs; need 14 more from 24 balls

Buttler is not in a mood to stop and take it slow. He is striking the ball with ease as he slams Piyush Chawla for three consecutive boundaries. With this he also completes his second fifty of the season. RR-108/3 after 15 overs; need more 18 from 30 balls

Fifty for Buttler

Jos Buttler gets his fifty, and he brings it up in some style, with a powerful boundary! He’s really been dragging this run chase along single-handedly!

Shardul Thakur’s leaks 9 runs- expensive for CSK at the moment. A couple of singles, a double, and a rare Steve Smith boundary, that’s delicately lifted into the empty fine leg boundary. RR-92/3 after 14 overs; need more 34 from 36 balls

Piyush Chawla finally brought onto the attack and Dhoni is clearly trying to curtail Buttler’s hitting. It works, to an extent. Just four off the over, but RR will hardly be stressing. RR-83/3 after 13 overs; need more 43 from 42 balls

A good over for Rajasthan as 13 runs come off it. Buttler is making things look easy as he slams Shardul Thakur towards the deep backward point, and then plays a impecabble drive towards the long-on region for a six. RR-79/3 after 12 overs; need more 47 from 48 balls

After 3 early blows, Buttler-Smith add 38 from 39 balls to get the RR chase back in track. RR-66/3 after 11 overs; need more 60 from 54 balls

We reach the halfway mark

Eight of Shardul Thakur’s over. Buttler gets a double and then manages to just about beat a sprinting fielder on the boundary line at midwicket. Another single and a couple of dots to end it. RR-59/3 after 10 overs ; need more 67 from 60 balls

50 comes up for RR; Strategic Timeout taken

Hazlewood’s comes in to finish his quota of 4 overs. Buttler lofts over mid-on and the ball races away for four. A dot and a single make it 8 off the over, as we head into a strategic timeout. RR- 51/3 after 9 overs

Chahar bowled out

Deepak Chahar has bowled all his four overs, in which the seamer gave away 18 runs and picked the important wicket of Ben Stokes and Sanju Samson RR-43/3 after 8 overs; need more 83 from 72 balls

Spin introduced by Dhoni as Ravindra Jadeja’s brought into the bowling attack. Buttler comes on strike and begin with a boundary. He gets down expertly and reverse sweeps out to the point boundary. A double and a couple of singles make it 9 off the over. RR-40/3 after 7 overs; need more 86 from 78 balls

End of Powerplay!

RR-31/3 after 6 overs; need more 95 from 84 balls

Maiden-wicket from Chahar

Consecutive good overs for CSK. Sanju Samson is sent back to the pavilion after the tiniest of edges carries to MS Dhoni, who dives excellently to catch. It’s also a maiden over from Chahar. He’s single-handedly saving CSK’s fate tonight. RR- 28/3 after 5 overs; need more 98 from 90 balls

Milestone for MS Dhoni

RR go 3 down

Another wicket for Deepak Chahar and this time Dhoni takes a brilliant catch diving to his left. The ball was sliding down the leg-side and Sanju Samon tried to nudge it. However, an alert Dhoni picks up a brilliant catch to help CSK pull things around. FOW-28/3

Hazlewood bowls the fourth over, and he begins by conceding a double, after Uthappa chips over mid-on as RR lose another wicket! Captain Smith comes in for the Royals, and the first four deliveries he faces are all dots. RR-28/2 after 4 overs; need more 98 from 96 balls

Hazlewood joins the party; Uthappa falls for 4

Robin Uthappa tried to scoop a slower one from Josh Hazlewood over MS Dhoni’s head, but there was no timing and he has just given an easy catch to CSK captain. FOW- 28/2

Chahar’s continues and makes amends for his expensive first over. A couple of singles and dots, and the fifth delivery is absolutely walloped by Ben Stokes! But Chahar comes back strongly as Stokes chops on to the wicket on the next ball.  RR-26/1 after 3 overs; need more 100 from 17 overs

Stokes clean bowled by Chahar

Deepak Chahar does it again for CSK as Ben Stokes drags a good length delivery onto his stumps. The England all-rounder is frustrated as he walks back after scoring 19 from 11 balls. FOW-26/1

Expensive start from CSK

Deepak Chahar gets Chennai’s bowling attack underway. Starts with a dot but the second is hammered away by Ben Stokes for four! The next delivery is a bit better, it’s a dangerous outswinger, but then Chahar gives away five runs due to a terrible overthrow from Rayudu. Chahar then bowls a peach of a delivery, which hits Uthappa on the pads. Chahar fights for it to be reviewed after the umpire declares not-out and it’s  unsuccessful. RR-10/0 after 1 over

We are underway with RR’s chase

Stokes and Uthappa walks out for RR; Deepak Chahar to start of proceedings for CSK

Jofra bowls the 19th over. After conceding a single off the first ball, he bowls a beautiful delivery to beat Kedar Jadhav. Good batting from Jadeja as he finds much-needed boundaries in this over. 11 from this one, just one more remaining. CSK-118/5 after 19 overs

Kartik Tyagi to Dhoni. A full toss first up but Dhoni doesn’t take the advantage so just one run. Jadeja gets an inside edge to his pads and the batsman take another single. Archer’s misfield is cruel on Tyagi who executed his delivery really well. In the next ball, despite another misfield, Archer make amends with a good throw to dismiss Dhoni. CSK-107/5 after 18 overs

MS Dhoni run out

Another fumble from Archer at long-off but the throw is spot on. MS Dhoni is inches short as he fails to complete the second run.

100 comes up for CSK

The Dhoni-Jadeja pair have spent substantial amount of time in the middle and with time running out they need to now look for the boundaries. CSK-100/4 after 17 overs

Stokes back into attack. Slower one to start off and he does well to fox Jadeja. The ball hits the pads and there’s a loud appeal but the umpire is not interested. Seven off the over. CSK-96/4 after 16 overs

Fantastic bowling from Rahul Tewatia with the ball. He is keeping Dhoni and Jadeja scratching their heads to get away with a boundary. CSK-89/4 after 15 overs

Back to back boundaries from Jadeja

Strategic Timeout taken

Back to back boundaries from Ravindra Jadeja on Karthik Tyagi delivery, two late cuts, one goes past point, the other to the third man boundary. Great batting. CSK-85/4 after 14 overs

Shreyas Gopal’s final over. The leg-spinner tempts both batsman with flight but no risk taken. Just three from the over, and that’s it over for Gopal. Excellent spell, four overs for just 14 runs and one wicket to his name. CSK-71/4 after 13 overs

Tewatia to Dhoni. Bad fielding from Tyagi at backward point and Dhoni collects three runs. Jadeja pushes the ball in the gap on the off-side and batsmen run two. Two again off the final ball for Jadeja. CSK-68/4 after 12 overs

Ravindra Jadeja is the new batsman. After one run from three balls, Jadeja tries to find the gap on the leg-side but the deep mid-wicket fielder keeps it to just two runs. Five from the Shreyas Gopal’s third over. CSK-61/4 after 11 overs

Tewatia comes on

Dhoni should’ve looked for singles and double when he can instead of just blocking. One wicket plus just one run from the over. Excellent from Tewatia. CSK-56/4 after 10 overs

Milestone for Samson

Rayudu dismissed finally!

The batsman tries the sweep, gets a top edge and a simple catch to the keeper Samson

CSK-55/3 after 9 overs

Rayudu saved by review

Rayudu falls to a LBW appeal but he takes the review. Everything went right except the ball is missing the stumps so the batsman survives. Four off the over.

Curran falls for 22; CSK 3 down

Dances down the track and takes on long-off fielder. No timing at all as the catch is taken. Gopal with the wicket. Strategic Timeout taken; FOW-53/3

50 comes up for CSK

Rahul Tewatia into the attack. Curran takes a single off the first ball and the next one is a wide. Then bowls  free-hit. Rayudu comes down the track but no timing in his shot. Catch is taken at short third-man but it’s not counted. Good bowling from the leggie but looks like he’s struggling with his ankle. Six off the over. CSK-51/2 after 8 overs

Good over from Rajasthan

Spin for the first time today. Shreyas Gopal starts off with a dot and a single against Rayudu. Curran times his shot well but Steve Smith at cover comes up with a good save. Leading edge in the next one, Smith again does well to stop the runs. A single to end the over. CSK-45/2 after 7 overs

End of Powerplay!

Great recovery by Kartik Tyagi as just two runs come from it. The powerplays are done as CSK score 43 runs for the loss of two wickets. CSK-43/2 after 6 overs

Costly from Stokes!

Stokes gives away 15 from his first over of the night. Wonder if Steve Smith will give him another one. Rayudu starts his innings on a positive note. CSK-41/2 after 5 overs

Eventful over from Tyagi

Tyagi concedes three boundaries but takes the big wicket of Shane Watson off the final ball. 13 runs plus a wicket in the over. CSK-26/2 after 4 overs

Watson departs next

Karthik Tyagi bowls an inswinger on Shane Watson’s pads and the batsman flicks it straight to Rahul Tewatia at short mid-wicket. FOW- 26/2

Superb over from Archer

Archer continues. Curran gets a thick edge in the third ball but no fourth slip so that’s a single. Archer bowls a slow yorker to Faf who flicks it and collects two runs. And a big wicket of Faf du Plessis to end the over. CSK-13/1 after 3 overs

Faf du Plessis falls cheaply!

High and wide from Archer. Faf tries to beat the point fielder but Steve Smith pulls off a good catch.

Rajpoot balls from the other end. A misfield from Robin Uthappa in the fourth ball results in a single. Another short ball, this time on the shoulders of Faf. The batsman pulls it, gets an edge and over keeper’s head. Kartik Tyagi comes up with a good fielding effort near the rope, save two runs. Eight off the over. CSK-10/0 after 2 overs

Faf gets the first boundary of the day

A short one to Faf du Plessis, he picked the length right and just pulled it towards deep midwicket for first boundary of the match.

Good start from RR

Archer makes a strong start as CSK’s opener fail to find any big shot in the opening over. Just 2 off it. CSK-2/0 after 1 over

Here we go!

Curran and Du Plessis opens for CSK; Jofra Archer to start off proceedings for RR.

RR Playing XI

CSK Playing XI

Faf du Plessis, Sam Curran, Shane Watson, Ambati Rayudu, MS Dhoni(w/c), Ravindra Jadeja, Kedar Jadhav, Deepak Chahar, Piyush Chawla, Shardul Thakur, Josh Hazlewood

Steven Smith: He (Stokes) has put up okay fortunately, good to go tonight. The equation is pretty simple for us we need to keep winning, hopefully we can start tonight. We have to bowl first, restrict them and chase it down. We will see how we go (about his batting position). I found a bit of rhythm the other day which was nice and hopefully can carry on. We have got one change – Rajpoot comes in for Unadkat.

MS Dhoni: We will bat first. It is a used wicket and chances are it may slow down as the game progresses, that’s been the trend and the reason we want to put runs on the board. He (Bravo) won’t be available for the next few games. I think injuries are not only our concern but for quite a few other franchises as well, one of the reason being because the players have not played competitive cricket for a long time. You spoke about it and that’s how I got to know (referring to his 200th IPL game). It feels good but at the same time it’s just a number. I feel fortunate to play for such a long time without many injuries. We have a couple of changes – in place of Bravo we have got Josh Hazlewood and in place of Karn we have got Chawla

CSK wins toss and opts to bat first.

No more replacement on the cards for CSK

“I don’t think a replacement is an option at this stage because if a new person comes in, it will again be about having a quarantine period for him before he can join the rest of the squad. It is unlikely that we will look at a replacement for Bravo if he is out. But firstly we are hoping Bravo isn’t out and the injury isn’t major,” CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan told ANI.

Toss to take place in exactly one hour; to be held at 7pm. What should the captain elect after winning toss?

Pitch conditions:

In the previous matches in Abu Dhabi, dew has played its part and hasn’t as well. The conundrum over whether to bat first or chase in Abu Dhabi continues. Pacers have enjoyed some swing with the new ball although the change of pace and the ‘hard’ lengths have served them well in the second half of the innings.

-Steve Smith requires 3 fours and 21 runs respectively to complete 1000 IPL runs and 100 IPL fours for RR.
