The Delhi Government has honoured visually-impaired para-athlete Avnil Kumar with a cheque of ₹ 50 lakh for his bronze medal at the Jakarata Paralympics earlier this year.

The Delhi Chief Minister, keeping with the State policy of honouring the international achiever sportspersons at their doorsteps, presented Avnil with the ₹ 50 lakh cheque at his Vishwash Nagar residence in East Delhi.

“Avinal has brought laurels not just for himself or his family but to the Delhi State and the nation as well. We will also like to thank his coach and the family,” the Delhi Chief Minister said.

The 25-year-old Avnil, who hails from Kangra in Himachal Pradesh, has bagged the bronze medal in the 400-metre event at the Jakarta Paralympics.

Kumar, though has been running in competitions since his school days, had started preparing for the 400-metre competition only a year and a half ago.

The Delhi Government earlier this month has also announced that the athletes from the State representing India in international competitions, under the “Mission Excellence”, will receive ₹16 annually to meet their training and coaching expenses.
