Emilia-Romagna Open 2021: Katerina Siniakova upsets Serena Williams in second round- Top-seeded Serena Williams faced a defeat against World No. 68 Katerina Siniakova in the second round of the Emilia-Romagna Open on Tuesday.
The first set went into the tie-breaker (6-6)where Siniakova clinched the set 7-4. While in the second set Siniakova dominated the game and won it 6-2.
Williams was playing just her fourth event of 2021 and her second since bowing out of the Australian Open semifinals, taking a wildcard into Parma after enduring an opening round defeat at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia to Nadia Podoroska.
In Serena’s debut match at the competition, she earned her first win of the clay-court season, easing past inspired Italian qualifier Lisa Pigato, 6-3, 6-2 to advance at the inaugural Emilia-Romagna Open in Parma.
“I’ve played everywhere, so now I can add this to the list. The atmosphere is great, and it’s cool to be here,” the top seed laughed after the match.
Katerina’s tennis career
Katerina is a former world No. 1 player in doubles, she won two consecutive Grand Slam titles. She became No. 1 in doubles on 22 October 2018 and held the top ranking for 33 consecutive weeks. Her biggest singles triumph came at the 2019 French Open where she upset the world No. 1 and winner of the last two Grand Slam tournaments, Naomi Osaka, en route to the fourth round. She has won two singles and nine doubles titles on the WTA Tour, as well as one WTA 125K doubles title, and seven singles and four doubles titles on the ITF Circuit.
