Stumps, Day 3

It has been an incredible game of cricket today. Fourteen wickets have fallen as we head for a four-day cliffhanger! Pakistan have the upper hand still, with runs on the board and a very tasty pace attack up their arsenal. The current lead is 244.

Yes, we do! Ben Stokes joins the party!

Pakistan lose their 8th wicket; a well-directed bouncer later and he has his second wicket! Shaheen was just trying to fend it off and gloved it to Rory Burns at gully. FOW-137/8

Last 8 minutes of the match left

Will we see another wicket?

What an incredible tale of cricket this has been!

Broad gets his second wicket as Pakistan lose their 7th wicket. Shadab Khan trapped LBW; departs for 15. FOW-122/7

DRS confirms the dismissal

Pakistam 6 down

Stokes beats the bat and hits Rizwan on the back leg, height is the issue but up goes the finger. That proves crucial as Rizwan reviews and it is umpire’s call. England are still in this. FOW-120/6

Pakistan keep grinding

Stokes, Root, Broad, Bess have a long conversation, Archer comes up to have a word and is given a shake-up by Broad. Rizwan keeps attacking. Shadab picks up a short ball and crashes it into deep midwicket for four. PAK 106/5 after 35

Pakistan lose half their side!

Just what the Pakistan dressing room was dreading of! Hesitation between Rizwan and Shafiq. Dom Sibley makes the most of it with Asad barely in the frame.

200 lead comes up for Pakistan

Clever paddle sweep from Asad, gets the ball fine and it runs all the way to the fence. That takes the lead up to 200 and this partnership has reasserted Pakistan’s position of strength. PAK-95/4 after 33 overs

Riwan-Shafiq show nerves of steel

Rizwan and Shafiq has shown some strong nerves as they steady the Pakistan innings after an initial shock. All they need to do now is to keep the scoreboard ticking!

Woakes-the gamechanger for England

Stats Trivia

DRS confirms the wicket too

Pakistan 4 wickets down

It’s all going downhill for the visitors at the moment as skipper Azhar Ali is trapped LBW by Woakes. A full and straight delivery as the PAK captain was wise enough not to waste a review. FOW-63/4

After 23 overs; PAK-63/3 (Lead by 170 runs)

Big blow for PAK; Azam dismissed for 5

Edged to the slips and Stokes makes no mistake this time to earn Woakes a wicket with his fifth ball of the over. FOW-48/3

Stats Trivia

Dom Bess strikes!

Abid Ali dismissed after a well-settled score of 20. The change does the trick as Abid top-edges an attempted sweep off the last ball of Bess’ over to Woakes at deep square. FOW-33/2

Azahar Ali off the mark

The Pakistan captain will heave a sigh of relief as he gets his first runs of the series. And he gets them with consecutive fours. PAK 29/1 after 11

Stats Trivia

We are back for the third and final session of Day 3

Day 3, Tea Break
Summary so far

Abid dropped by Stokes

Abid edges a couple in this Anderson over, one flying through the vacant gully region, while Stokes’ error really should have been Root’s catch at first slip, but Stokes – forever wanting to be in the game – dives across him and puts the chance down.

After 6 overs; PAK-8/1 (Azhar 0*, Abid 3*) – LEAD BY 115

Broad beats Azhar’s outside edge with back-to-back deliveries that whistle past his defensive prods; another probing over from Broad, the Pakistan skipper is still stuck on a pair.

Joe Root injured

Ben Stokes to act as standing captain in the interim. Joe Root has hurt his finger after attempting a catch in the slips.

Shan Masood bites the dust

First innings hero for PAK, Masood is dismissed cheaply for a duck as England have been wondering how to get him out for the best part of three days. Not Broad’s best delivery, but Masood gets a thin tickle on the willow through to Buttler. FOW-6/1

We are back with the PAK 2nd innings

A bit of good news for England as Ben Stokes was seen bowling in the break.

Innings break

Pakistan lead by 107 runs.

Hawk Eye confirms the wicket!

Shadab Khan puts the final nail in the coffin!

England’s final-wicket fun comes to an end as Anderson attempts one reverse-sweep too many, failing to get bat on ball and getting pinned in front lbw. Shadab makes up for his drop in the previous over and ends the innings. FOW-219/10

Broad dropped on 23

Yasir Shah’s first ball for a sweet six over deep square-leg, but in the next ball he picks out the fielder in the deep – only for Shadab to drop a pretty straightforward chance!

200 comes up for England

A tasty reverse-sweep from jimmy Anderson to bring up the double hundred for England. ENG-202/9 after 68 overs

England 9 down
Shadab Khan joins the act!

Archer, just after a DRS save but couldn’t last long in the crease. He seemed to be trying to leave the ball as it turned just a touch and fizzed through to Rizwan, crucially via the glove of the England man. FOW-197/9

Pakistan lose another review

Pakistan goes upstairs for a caught behind off Archer – he only missed it by three or four inches.

The Broadside show!
Triple boundary from Broad

Stuart Broad sends Shaheen Afridi for three consecutive boundaries, adding as many quick runs to the England total as possible. ENG-184/8 after 63 overs

That’s a blimey!

Yasir Shah on a roll!

A shorter and a bit quicker delivery from Yasir as Woakes went back and tried to pull it but the ball rushed through, very little turn, and into middle stump. FOW-170/8

Stats Trivia

Yasir Shah very rarely bowls his googly. Almost 94 per cent of his deliveries are leg breaks in Test cricket – only a handful of balls turn the other way.

Third wicket for Yasir Shah!

Dom Bess goes forward but this one turns sharply from Yasir and takes the shoulder of the bat. It goes high but Asad Shafiq gets his hands to it at slip as Bess departs cheaply for just 1. FOW-161/7

Pakistan lose a review

Azhar Ali went for the review. It’s a fair delivery, the impact is umpire’s but wickets are missing. It just didn’t look close enough for a review. They lose one but still have two more reviews remaining.

Here’s some in-depth analysis of the Yasir Shah delivery

Pakistan strike early after lunch!

6th wicket down for England!

Yasir Shah claims his second wicket as Butler anticipates turn that never comes and the ball goes straight between bat and pad, clattering into off stump. FOW-159/6

We are back with the second session!

Naseem Shah is back to fire up as Chris Woakes once again pads up against the youngster. Will there be a twist in the tale in the afternoon session?

After 50 overs; ENG-156/5 (Buttler 37*, Woakes 14*)

The rain has stopped and we are back again!

Unfortunate news from the middle

Rain stops play – the players walking off due to this rather unexpected shower. Trust me, it’s going to be a short break – the shower having all but cleared up already.

Woakes fit to continue

Chris Woakes puts on a rib protector as he shuffles to leg, showing nearly three stumps, and is beaten by Naseem outside off-peg.

Injury delay
Woakes hit by a ripper from Naseem

We have a slight delay in play as England all-rounder Chris Woakes undergoes the concussion protocols and has his helmet checked out. Hopefully, it’s nothing serious.

Ollie Pope dismissed for 62

17-year-old Naseem Shah gets one to spit at Pope; it takes the edge and is well held low down by Shadab in the gully. FOW-127/5

Stats trivia

Butler brings up the 50 partnership with Pope with a flamboyant boundary through the covers. ENG-115/4 after 43 overs

Naseem, Abbas in control

There are more instances of the ball beating the bat that actually hitting its middle. A couple of balls from Abbas were perilously close to Jos Buttler’s bat and Naseem with his pace, is throwing down fireballs at Pope. ENG-111/4 in 42 overs.

That was close!!

How did that not carry? Nassem Shah draws the edge from Buttler, pushing at one outside off with hard hands this time, but somehow it falls just short of Azhar at slip. ENG-106/4 after 37 overs

Stats Trivia

32 of Mohammad Abbas’ 68 Test wickets have come with deliveries that would have hit or clipped the stumps.

100 up for England

Abbas to Butler but the ball wobbles away and beats Rizwan too! ENG-102/4 after 34 overs

Half-century for Ollie Pope

Pope pushes out and flicks through the leg side, two more to bring up his fifty as the English balcony applauds his efforts.

Maiden from Abbas

Pin-point accuracy as always from Mohammad Abbas. Buttler did good while covering the in-swing and defending confidently.

Aaand we are underway!

Shaheen Afridi to start proceedings as Ollie Pope takes his stance at the striker’s end.

Day 2 recap

England scored 92/4 at stumps on Day 2 and trail Pakistan by 235 runs. Joe Root and Ollie Pope were building a budding partnership but their stand was broken by Yasir Shah. Earlier.
