EURO 2020: Top 7 players who will miss European Football’s biggest show

  1. Netherlands and Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk pulled out of the tournament to focus on his recovery from an ACL injury.
  2. Zlatan Ibrahimovic is another notable absentee due to injury after the Swede picked up a knee injury while playing for AC Milan in May.
  3. Germany second-choice custodian Marc-Andre ter Stegen also pulled out of the tournament to undergo treatment on his right knee.
  4. Borussia Dortmund captain Marco Reus also decided to make himself unavailable for selection in a bid to recover from a gruelling season at club level.
  5. Erling Haaland and Jan Oblak: If injuries and need for recovery forced the aforementioned players out of contention, the likes of Erling Haaland and Jan Oblak will not feature in the competition after failing to qualify with Norway and Slovenia respectively.
  6. Sergio Ramos: However, probably the most shocking omission of them all comes in the form of Sergio Ramos. The Real Madrid and Spain captain failed to get into Luis Enrique’s plans for the tournament and was left out of the 26-man squad.

Although Spain have had COVID-19 concerns recently, La Roja have not hinted at calling up Ramos as a standby option either.

There is no shortage of talent at the tournament this year and chances are that we may witness the birth of new heroes as well.

The opening game of Euro 2020 will witness Turkey locking horns with Italy at the Stadio Olimpico.
