Valtteri Bottas led a Mercedes one-two at the end of a hectic final practice session at the Eifel Grand Prix.
The stand-out performance, though, came from Charles Leclerc, who was third fastest for Ferrari as the team tried out what they call minor upgrades in an attempt to improve their performance.
Hamilton was on a lap that would have put him fastest when he had to back off at the final corner as a result of a spin by Williams driver Nicholas Latifi.
That left Bottas quickest by 0.136secs at the end of the only practice session before qualifying, after Friday’s running was abandoned because of low cloud which prevented the medical helicopter flying.
Leclerc’s team-mate Sebastian Vettel continued the encouraging performance by Ferrari with fifth place, the red cars sandwiching Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, who also had a lap ruined by Latifi.
There are questions over the participation of Racing Point’s Lance Stroll, who did not take part in the session because he was unwell.
Racing Point have not said who might replace the Canadian if he cannot drive in qualifying, but the contenders are German Nico Hulkenberg, who has raced for the team twice already this year when Sergio Perez contracted coronavirus in the summer.
Mercedes reserve driver Stoffel Vandoorne, who Racing Point can call on, is also at the track and available should the team want the Belgian.
