A year ago he was valued a mere ₹30 lakh. He dares to enter the same market with a price tag of ₹1.5 crore. He turns out to be the man in demand in the Indian Premier League auction hall at Bengaluru, fetching almost 39 times escalation over his previous season’s bid price and nearly 11 times more than his base price this season. This is JAYDEV UNADKAT.

The fast bowler, who got the best bid for an Indian cricketer to go under the hammer at the IPL 2018 auction. Rajasthan Royals ₹11.5 successful bid for Unadkat is second only to fellow Royal Ben Stokes. The Englishman had come to the RR camp for ₹12.5 crore on Saturday.

The buyers Rajasthan Royals justify their intense bidding for Unadkat is not unlogical. “In a short career, Unadkat has reached 100 wickets and is a fast strike bowler. He did well last year. We have a good batting line-up but we lacked depth in death bowling and spin bowling. We didn’t go for emotional reasons,” the team spokesperson is reported as saying.

The IPL has been a financial roller coaster ride for Unadkat, who had entered the league on a ₹2.8 crore offer from Delhi Daredevils four seasons ago. He did manage to stay with the Red and Blue brigade of the GMR-owned team for the next season but for a salary cut of ₹1.7 crore – a sharp decline of over 60%.

Unadkat drew marginally better values for his talent and efforts in the next season, as Kolkata Knight Riders got him for ₹1.6 crores. There was worst in store. There were few buyers for the medium pace in the 10th season of the IPL. But for Rising Pune Supergiants sparing him the agony of going unsold. A deal for mere ₹30 lakh kept in afloat on the big IPL platform.

He returned the franchisee’s favour with some awe-inspiring spells of swing and seam – in the process also claiming a hat-trick in the wicket maiden over and in the process reaching the 100-wicket milestone in the cash-rich league. The five-wicket haul in that match against Sunrisers Hyderabad has etched this talent in the memoirs of each franchisee, good enough for him to find a place in their pace attack strategies for an all-new Season 11.

The intense battle among the bidders has secured Unadkat a place in the RR camp and the best deal for an Indian player in the auction. All eyes will be on him. It is his turn to justify this high billing.
