FIFA World Cup 2018 has been an instant hit on Sony Ten 2. The World Cup 2018 opener between hosts Russia and Saudi Arabia is the most watched sports genre show on Indian television for week 24 (Saturday, June 9, to Friday, June 15) on Broadcast Audience Research Council Indian television audience ratings data.
The week between June 9 and June 15 had only two days action and a mere three FIFA World Cup matches. However, on the BARC ratings chart, these three matches were good enough to push all other action out of the top five sports genre shows chart.
The Russia-Saudi Arabia match on Sony Ten 2 with English language world feed has recorded 32,82,000 impressions as the No. 1 sports genre show for the week. The .99 GRP for the FIFA World Cup has been unprecedented for a non-cricket sports broadcast in the country. Regional language broadcast of the match on Sony ESPN also figure in the top five positions.
The .99 GRP is enviable for non-cricket sports broadcast in India. India’s two Intercontinental Cup matches, following an emotional appeal by captain Sunil Chhetri had registered 7,01,00 and 6,85,000 impressions for the games against Kenya and New Zealand respectively.
The cricket fan base and consumption remains far beyond the reach of any other sport in India. The Chennai Super Kings vs Kolkata Knight Riders match as the most watched show in the Indian Premier League first week had recorded 1,60,88,000 impressions – nearly five times more than the viewership ratings of the FIFA World Cup opener.
