The frenzy and madness among the Indian football fans is soaring up to match the passion for the FIFA World Cup 2018 Finals anywhere across the globe. No matter if India is not in that elite league of Football Super Powers, Indian fans have their “Doosri countries” to cheer during the June 14-July 15 mahakumbh of football.
Indian football lovers this time cannot be happier as the match scheduled is pretty well suited for the Indian timings as compared to previous editions in Brazil (2014) and South Africa (2010). The Indian fans will no more be required to sacrifice their hard-earned slumber after a long day of hard work and toil in the workplace.
The tournament opener between Saudi Arabia and hosts Russia on June 14 and the Grand Final on July 15 are both slated to kick off at 8.30 PM IST, the best timing for television audience across the globe.
Most of the matches in the group stages scheduled as earlier as 5:30 pm and 8:30 pm in the evening. There will be no more of the next day office ‘blues’ for the die-hard football fans in India.
The Russian edition of the World Cup will see a total of 32 teams taking part for the second last time, with Qatar 2022 being the last edition before the 2026 World Cup opens up 16 more slots to make it a 48 team event.
The 32 teams have been divided into 8 groups. Hosts Russia, are in Group A, with top contenders Spain in Group B along with European champions Portugal. Defending champions Germany have been placed in Group F. The traditional football powerhouse Italy, who won the 2006 edition in Germany, will be missed.
