French Open 2020 : Ankita Raina enters round 2 of qualifiers, will take on Japan’s Kurumi Nara

India’s Ankita Raina has won her opening round qualifier in the French Open 2020. Raina came through a marathon three-setter against Serbian Jovana Jovic to reach the second round of the French Open Qualifying in Paris on Tuesday.

India No. 1 Raina, world ranked 175, overcame the 26-year-old Jovic 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 in two hours and 47 minutes, the decider alone lasting an hour and 11 minutes, in the opening round at the Roland Garros.

It was a sweet revenge for the 27-year-old from Gujarat as Jovic, ranked 232, had beaten her six years ago in a $50,000 ITF event on clay in Anning, China.

Raina will next be up against Japan’s Kurumi Nara, who too had to fight her way to a 7-6 (3), 3-6, 6-2 victory over home wildcard Aubane Droguet.

Nara, 28, had also beaten Raina in their previous meeting, in a $80,000 ITF event in Gifu, Japan, last year.
