Stanislas Wawrinka vs Andy Murray Live, the French Open 2020 first round match up could not have got bigger than this. Andy Murray returns to Roland Garros for the first time since the 5-setter against the same opponent in 2017.
While Wawrinka heads into what has become the last Grand Slam of the pandemic-hit season as the 16th seed, Murray needed a wildcard to make his return to the biggest clay-court stage.
Andy Murray conceded that facing his old foe as early as the first round is “amusing” but looked at the positives, saying a win against the fellow former finalist will set up him for the rest of the tournament.
“It would probably have been nicer to play someone different at the beginning, and potentially build your way into the tournament. But you win against Stan in the first round and it can open things up and make you feel much better as well. We’ll see what happens on Sunday,” Murray said.
“That match I played against Stan a few years ago was a brutal one.”
French Open 2020 : Murray vs Wawrinka, who can win the match ?
Murray hasn’t had spent a lot of time on the dirt as he heads into the French Open after a second-round exit at US Open, which was also his first major appearance in 18 months. Murray had made a good start to his New York campaign by beating Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka but he exited in the 2nd round after losing to Felix Auger-Aliassime.
Coming up against Stan Wawrinka, who is slowly but steadily making his way up again, Murray said he has to be “realistic” about his chances and enjoy playing at the Roland Garros after the long gap.
“I’ve practised, like, for 10 days on clay in three and a half years. It’s normally not been my preferred surface. I’ve played well on it, had good wins on it, but it’s always been a surface that’s been harder for me to adjust to than the other ones. Maybe it doesn’t suit my game as well as the grass and the hard courts.
“So I need not to expect too much from myself, and go out and enjoy playing at the French Open again. Getting to play against Stan again, it’s brilliant,” Murray said.
On the other hand, Stan Wawrinka who reached the quarter-finals at Australian Open 2020, has played a couple of Challengers on the clay but suffered a shock first-round exit at last week’s Italian Masters.
