French Open 2021: Russian player Yana Sizikova detained over suspected match-fixing- What comes as a shocking development from Roland Garros is that a Russian player has been detained over suspected match-fixing. Yana Sizikova, who is ranked 101st in the women’s doubles rankings, was detained on Thursday night after a match in this year’s tournament as part of an investigation into possible corruption and fraud, AFP quoted a police source.
The 26-year-old was arrested on Thursday after her first-round doubles which included Ekaterina Alexandrova. The duo had played against Ajla Tomljanovic and Storm Sanders. They lost the match 1-6, 1-6.
As per a report from Daily Star, the allegations reportedly relate to the fifth game of the second set where she had committed two double faults and messed up a point.
Security tried to block the arrest before police were able to search the Tennis players hotel room, reported Le Parisian.
It is believed that the suspicion started during the previous edition of the tournament. Investigators are interested in the opening-round match she played last year, in which it is alleged that tens of thousands of euros were waged with several betting operators on doubles match against Romanian opponents Andreea Mitu and Patricia Maria, reported express.co.uk
Tomljanovic and Sanders defeated Sizikova and Alexandrova and will next face Elena Rybakina and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in round two of the women’s doubles.
This year’s French Open has been focussed off the court, with four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka leaving the World Tour after boycotting press conferences at Roland Garros to protect her mental health.
French Open 2021 began on May 30 (main draw) and runs until June 13.
