French Open 2020: Stefanos Tsitsipas and Andrey Rublev advance to their 1st Roland Garros quarter-finals
Greek tennis star Stefanos Tsitsipas took down No.18 seed Grigor Dimitrov 6-3, 7-6 (9), 6-2 to make it to his first Roland Garros quarter-finals.
Along with it, he has gone on to create history of sorts as he is the first Greek player, man or woman, to reach the French Open quarter-finals.
He will now square off with Russian Andrey Rublev, for the second time in 10 days. Just last Sunday, the two players had met at the finals of the Hamburg Open, a day prior to the start of Roland Garros and the Russian had beaten Tsitsipas in three sets.
On Monday, however, Tsitsipas was just too good for the Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov. The 22-year-old converted 3 out of 12 break points and won 71 per cent of the points on both his first and second serve en route to a two-hour 26-minute victory.
Speaking after the game, he said, “I felt comfortable and I think playing Grigor, he can be very unpredictable, he has a very good game, so coming into the match you don’t really know what to expect.
“We have a similar style of play, so I knew if I can be as aggressive as possible and play with forehand, use my serve to create opportunities, they’re eventually going to come. That was a very high quality of tennis from both of us.”
Andrey Rublev had to fight it out
His opponent in the quarter-final, Rublev had to show more fight as he triumphed over Hungarian Marton Fucsovics 6-7 (4), 7-5, 6-4, 7-6 (3).
Rublev battled for nearly four hours before leaping into the Roland-Garros quarter-finals for the first time in his career.
Rublev is now on a nine-match winning streak and he’s through to a second consecutive Grand Slam quarter-final, having reached the same stage at the US Open last month.
“I expected a match exactly like this. I expected it to be really, really tough. I’ve played him two times before. In Davis Cup I lost to him in five sets, so I knew it was going to be really tough. But in the end I’m really happy I won today,” the Russian said.
