She lost straight sets to Maria Sakkari. The match ended 6-4, 6-4 in favour of Sakkari. The match lasted just an hour and 35 minutes. Sakkari will next face Barbora Krejcikova in the semifinals.

The 20-year-old Pole, who had won her 22 previous sets at Roland Garros, took an off-court medical timeout at 0-2 in the second set.

Poland’s Iga entered the quarterfinal after beating Kaja Juvan 6-0 7-5, Rebecca Peterson 6-1 6-1, Anett Kontaveit 7-6(7-4) 6-0 and Marta Kostyuk 6-3 6-4. Sakkari has already produced a couple of upsets in the tournament by defeating World No.4 Sofia Kenin and Elise Mertens.

Iga Swiatek was looking to repeat her heroics in French Open 2021. Since 2008, no women player has defended the title at Roland Garros. Defending a title in women’s tennis is not a common feat among women’s singles of late. Serena Williams had defended the Wimbledon title in 2016.
