Gambhir always bats for charities and causes

Gautam Gambhir is standing by the families of 25 CRPF jawans martyred by Naxals in Chhatisgarh’s Sukma district. Not just emotionally. But through his deeds. The former India cricketer has pledged to extend support to martyr’s children through his Gautam Gambhir Foundation. The foundation shall support education of the children.

“Initial steps have already been taken in this regard,” Gambhir said. “I was shaken by the massacre and pictures of grieving daughters of two martyred CRPF officials left me feeling hollow.

“On Wednesday morning, I picked up newspapers and saw gut-wrenching pictures of the daughters of two CRPF men killed in the latest attacks. One was saluting her martyred father while in the other picture, the howling young woman was being consoled by her relative,” Gambhir wrote in a column for a leading daily.

There have been numerous occasion when the dashing left-hander has stood for his social responsibility and come forward to help the needy. Be it a sports team seeking funds for participation in an international event, or to sport a fellow sportsperson in need.

Last month, too, Gambhir spoke in favour of the Indian Army, but at the same time defended Delhi University student Gurmehar Kaur , who had posted a pro-peace message and was not just mocked for it but hounded. There were also rape threats against her. The gritty, aggressive cricketer has always been expressive in support of our Armymen.

It may be recalled that KKR team members had worn black armbands during their game on Wednesday as a mark of respect to the martyred CRPF men.

The Gautam Gambhir Foundation will take care of the entire education expenses of the children of these martyrs. “My team has already started working on this and I shall soon share the progress we have made,” he said.

Gautam as a cricketer, too, has openly taken on the powers that be in the interest of his juniors and youngsters.
