Seasoned campaigner Gautam Gambhir has been named the captain of the Delhi Daredevils for the Indian Premier League 2018.
The Delhi Daredevils chief executive Hemant Dua has made the formal announcement at an event in the Capital on Wednesday. Dua also shared his joy on Twitter.

Gambhir along with two other teammates ICC Under-19 World Cup star Manjot Kalra and Naman Ojha was present at the event.
“I’m more excited than I have ever been,” the Delhi boy Gambhir said about his home coming for the IPL. “You don’t play a tournament to make a comeback, you play to win the tournament. Every time before the IPL I am asked this question. But a leader plays to help his side win. Not for a personal comeback,” he added.
Delhi had “regained” Gambhir for ₹2.8 crore after Kolkata Knight Riders had decided to release the seasoned southpaw. Gambhir had later persuaded the IPL Kolkata franchisee to not to bid for him during the player auction. He had entered the auction at a base price of ₹ 2 crore.
“I’m privileged to be captaining Delhi Daredevils. It is always great to come back home, where you strated your IPL career, cricketing career as well,” Gambhir said. “Hopefully this is the place I’m going to finish as well. So I am really looking forward to it and really really, really excited about it.”
Dua welcomed the move to give the Delhi team reigns to Gambhir. “I had maintained post the auction that Gauti (Gambhir) has unfinished business with the franchise. He was the second highest scorer during the last IPL. But above all, he is a leader, so this appointment was an easy choice. Both Ricky (Ponting) and Gauti have spoken to each other. I am glad that they are both on the same page.”
“Gauti has been a leader for a very long time. He has always proven himself to be one of the top leaders during his stint with other sides in the IPL. He has a big personality, but it is the drive behind the outward confidence which I think will inspire the rest of the team. He has the respect of the dressing room and the franchise is proud to have him as our captain. I would like to congratulate him on the appointment and wish him, all the very best,” the DD coach Ricky Ponting said.
Ever since, Gambhir was released from the KKR camp there was a speculation that the Delhi veteran was willing to return home for signing off his IPL career from where it has all started.
The former India opener, who formed one of the most formidable opening pairs with Virender Sehwag, has led KKR to their two IPL title triumphs.
