Veteran batsman Gautam Gambhir has stepped down as the Delhi Delhi Daredevils captain, in the middle of the Indian Premier League season. The Delhi and former India batsman was acquired by the GMR-Group owned Delhi Daredevils for his base price of ₹ 2.8 crores and the Kolkata Knight Riders had refused to retain the left-handed veteran after seven successive seasons.
The Daredevils had also named Gambhir, who had represented the Delhi franchisee in the first three years of the IPL, to lead the team.
Gambhir, except for an innings of 55 runs, has failed to deliver both as a batsman and the captain. He has scored a mere 85 runs from six matches at an average of 17 and below run-a-ball strike rate of 96.59.
Delhi, seeking their first IPL crown, are currently placed at the bottom of the 2018 points tally with five defeats in six games.
Shreyas Iyer will replace Gambhir as the team captain.
