Former India opener Gautam Gambhir might open his political innings with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
The BJP is reportedly considering to field the left-handed batsman from one of the seven Delhi constituencies in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. A final decision on the party’s candidates for the seven Lok Sabha constituencies is expected soon.
Gambhir, highly vocal and active on social and national interest issues, had earlier denied any interests or ambitions to enter politics. Though, many ex-cricketers like Mohammad Azharuddin, Chetan Chauhan and Navjot Singh Siddhu are in active politics now.
“Top party (BJP) leaders have had discussions with him. A decision is likely to be taken soon,” Times of India has quoted an anonymous senior party leader as saying. Gambhir has lately been critical on Twitter of the policies of the Aam Aadmi Party, fuelling speculation that he might jump into the fray. It is not going to be an easy decision because of, among other things, Lekhi’s performance in Parliament.
Gambhir has also been active on social service issues. He had pledged educational support to the children of terror-attack victims. He also runs a community kitchen in West Delhi’s Patel Nagar area on a daily basis.
He is presently engaged with sports broadcasters for live commentary during international cricket matches.
