He was the first Indian cricketer to score 10,000 runs in Test cricket. The Cricketer-turned-commentator was also a part of India’s 1983 World Cup-winning team. He was the first batsman to reach 10,000 Test runs. He achieved the feat in his 124th Test on March 7, 1987.

13 Test centuries against West Indies. He is placed second in the list of most tons against any team (Don Bradman 19 tons against England).

Sunil Gavaskar was exchanged by a fisherman’s child at birth. He was spotted via a birthmark after which he was restored to his mother.

He was inspired by Madhav Mantri, his maternal uncle. The latter had played 4 Test matches for India.

The 72-year-old is an ardent devotee of Sai baba

Gavaskar has written 4 books on cricket. They are Sunny Days: An autobiography 1976, Idols (1983), Runs ‘n’ Runs (1984), One Day Wonders (1986).

Gavaskar is the only cricketer to score 4 consecutive centuries at 2 venues- Wankhede Stadium and Port of Spain

Sunil Gavaskar was named Widen cricketer of the year in 1980.
