Hosts India, after flying start against South Africa (5-5) and a draw with Belgium (2-2), are in pursuit of an emphatic win on their last Pool C encounter against Canada in the Odisha FIH Men’s World Cup at the Kalinga Stadium, Bhubaneswar, tomorrow (Saturday).
The Men in Blue are leading the Pool C on better goal difference. The hosts and Belgium have scored four points apiece from the first two outings, but the former leads the table for a better goal difference (+5) to Belgium’s (+1).
Both Canada and South Africa with one point each are virtually out of the quarter-finals race.
India thrashed South Africa 5-0 and drew 2-2 against Belgium in their earlier matches, while Canada lost 1-2 against the Red Lions before eking out a hard-fought 1-1 draw against the Africans.
India starts firm favourite against Canada on present form a big win on Saturday can potentially seal a quarter-finals spot for them. The hosts still can’t afford any upset at this stage as the pool remains open academically. But the past record will give some tense moments for the Indian camp.
Canada last year had defeated India 3-2 at the Hockey World League Semi-Finals in London. The Rio Olympics 2-2 draw should still be fresh the Indians’ memories.
