Star Sports’ OTT platform Hotstar is exploring the use of virtual reality to enhance viewer engagement and experience for the Indian Premier League.
Consumer and Revenue Head for Hotstar, Prabh Singh has revealed the new innovations and strategies for value addition to the IPL broadcast also include virtual reality experience for the viewers. The 21st Century Fox-owned broadcaster is contemplating the introduction of VR headsets during the IPL Season 11.
Hotstar is also experimenting with other innovations like score overlays to provide extra information to enhance the experience of watching live IPL action.
There are plans to give VR headsets to random spectators in stadiums or select subscribers of Hotstar. The broadcaster is working on the logistics, which may also include a tie-up with a VR headset company.
Star India has acquired all the broadcast rights for the IPL at a staggering INR 16,347.5 crore.
Star India is reportedly eyeing advertisement sales of INR 1,800 crore from the IPL 2018. Hotstar is tipped to contribute INR 300 crore to these projected revenues. The broadcaster for the first 10 seasons of IPL, Sony had generated INR 1,300 crore from the IPL 2017 ad sales while OTT platform Hotstar has garnered INR 120 crore.
