Hotstar has planned to spin its Indian Premier League broadcast launch in the USA big with Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh.
The ace Indian spin duo of Kumble and Harbhajan will be present in the New York City on February 24 at the ceremony to announce Hotstar USA’s coverage of IPL Season 11. The IPL trophy will also be put on display at the event venue.
The 21st Century Fox-owned Star Sports had acquired IPL’s all media rights for an unprecedented ₹16,347.5 crore (US$ 2.55 billion). Since, the parent company Star Sports holds all broadcast rights, for the first time, the IPL action will be simulcast on television and other mediums.
Insidesport.co has approached Star Sports-Hotstar media team for an official reaction. A response is awaited.
Hotstar last year had launched its premium VoD service for the US and Canada markets. The development indicates that Star Sport will not syndicate the IPL rights in the region.
Even as Hotstar had streamed the IPL 2017 live in India, Willow TV was the digital media and broadcast rights holder for the US territory. The primary broadcaster for cricket in North America, Willow had retained its existing media rights for the IPL 2017 for the territory.
It will be the second occasion for Kumble to unveil a major cricket trophy in the US. India’s most successful international bowler has also toured New York with the World T20 Trophy in 2011, then for ESPN.
