Hotstar’s record runs: Breaks 10 mn concurrent viewers mark in IPL final

IPL 2018 Final viewership record on Hotstar - InsideSport

Hotstar has completed the Indian Premier League Season 2018 with another world record on Sunday. Star India’s digital OTT platform during the Chennai Super Kings and SunRisers Hyderabad final breached the 10 million barrier for concurrent viewership – a world record on a digital platform for any sports.

With this Hotstar also completed a hat-trick of world records during the live streaming of the IPL 2018 matches. Reports suggest the number for Sunday’s final may by over 10.5 million.

The records’ spree has started from Day One of the league this season. Star India’s mobile digital platform had “registered” 42 million reach on the opening day of the league – the numbers were stated to be 2.3 times higher than for Hotstar’s Day One viewership for IPL 2017.

Thereafter Hotstar and Chennai Super Kings have marched on hand in hand to complete a hat-trick of world records for sports’ online viewership numbers.

The Chennai Super Kings-Kolkata Knight Riders’ game on Tuesday, April 10th, has reached the peak viewership concurrency of 5.5 million – then a global record in sports viewership on the digital platform. If Hotstar were a television channel, the rating on the opening game would have had an approximate average television percentage ratings of 3.1.

Then came the second big occasion when the first playoff between Chennai Super Kings and SunRisers Hyderabad on Tuesday, May 22, had 8.3 million people simultaneously hooked on to Hotstar for the live action of the game. “This a new global record. Bigger than Felix Baumgartner’s Supersonic Freefall on youtube,” by Hotstar CEO Ajit Mohan’s own admission.

The peak concurrent viewership for the final on Sunday is reported to be up to 10.7 million people. Star India and Hotstar are themselves pleasantly surprised with the unexpected and unbelievable numbers. The digital streaming platform will authenticate the numbers with Akamai before a formal release.

Hotstar has reportedly also breached the ₹100 crore barrier for the subscription revenue. This scorecard indicates Hotstar’s perfect debut for the simulcast of the IPL Live Action.
