The first round of qualifying will see two of the biggest teams in world cricket — Sri Lanka and Bangladesh besides Ireland and others fighting with associate nations.
Initially slated to be held in India, the tournament was shifted to UAE and Oman amid growing concerns over the COVID-19 pandemic situation. The tournament will see the participation of 16 teams, with ICC implementing a new format for the showpiece event. ICC T20 World Cup – The format:
The new ICC T20 World Cup format will see the tournament split into two phases with 16 teams competing. The top 10 ranked teams in the globe will be joined by associate nations like Papua New Guinea, Ireland, Oman Netherlands, Namibia, and Scotland besides three Test-playing nations in Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Ireland for the tournament which begins on October 17.
The five associates along with Sri Lanka and Bangladesh and Iraland will be split into two groups, with the top two sides from each group qualifying for the Super 12 stage. The Super 12 stage includes the top eight-ranked teams, and the four qualifying teams, which will then be divided into groups of six. The top two from each group will progress to the semi-finals, with the winners slated to play the final on November 14.

While the event has been moved on from India, BCCI will remain as the hosts of the event. The T20 World Cup will be the first time for both the UAE and Oman to be hosting a global ICC event. The event also marks the first occasion that a cricket World Cup was being held entirely outside of the elite Test-playing nations.
