England have eclipsed past New Zealand in the latest ICC World Test Championship points table after beating West Indies by 113 runs in the second Test. England secured 40 points for the win in the three-match series to climb to the third spot.
England now have 186 points and lead New Zealand by 6 points. India continue to be at the top of the standings with 360 points followed by Australia with 296 points.
After losing the first game in Southampton, the hosts, bolstered by the return of their captain Joe Root, put up a clinical effort to draw level in the three-match series.
Chasing 312 on the final day, West Indies were all out for 198. Barring Jermaine Blackwood (55) and Shamarh Brooks (62), no other West Indies player could provide any resistance to England’s bowling. The match looked all but over for the tourists when they were reduced to 37 for 4.
However, Blackwood and Brooks scored fifties and shared hundred runs for the fifth wicket to revive their team’s hopes. But just before tea, Ben Stokes sent back Blackwood and it opened the gates. After tea, West Indies lost wickets at regular intervals and were eventually all out for 198.
Earlier in the second innings, Stokes scored an unbeaten 78 off 57 deliveries as England declared their second innings having managed 129 for 3 in only 19 overs, with 92 of those runs coming in 11 overs they faced in the morning session on the final day.
West Indies, on the other hand, are lying at the seventh spot with 40 points. The Caribbean outfit had opened their account in the ICC Test Championship Points Table after winning the first Test.
