The ECB has moved the issue of cancelled fifth Test to the ICC. ECB has asked ICC to start the adjudication process with the hope of a speedy decision.

England & Wales Cricket Board’s Stance: ECB’s stance is clear that though the match can be rescheduled at sometime later – it will have no bearing on the present series that stands cancelled after the Oval game. According to ECB the match should be considered as ‘STANDALONE Test’.
BCCI’s Stance on the Issue: The Indian board and players have reiterated multiple times that the match will not be ‘forfeited’. In case of a forfeit, series honours would have been shared & BCCI doesn’t agree to that.
How ICC will resolve the issue? In all likelihood, ICC will have to intervene and figure out through their cricket committee on how to break the deadlock?
ICC Cricket Committee is led by former India captain Anil Kumble and Rahul Dravid as members. Nothing is finalized at this stage, how the issue will be handled.
The truncated England-India series kicked off the second cycle of the WTC that will culminate in 2023.

IND ENG Test Series – ICC to decide Winner: The Manchester Test was cancelled on August 10, three hours before it was supposed to start. On Wednesday, India’s physiotherapist Yogesh Parmar was tested posted for Covid-19. Earlier, three Indians from the support staff were also tested positive during Oval Test.
After a lot of discussion between ECB and BCCI, an option came up that India can play the remaining Test match next year when the team will tour England for limited-overs series.
However, ECB chief executive said that such a fixture would likely be viewed as a standalone Test rather than as a continuation of this summer’s series and if that is the case, it cant be a part of the World Test Championship.
Thus the fate of the summer’s series would need to be decided by ICC.
Update: The BCCI and ECB held several rounds of discussion to find a way to play the match, however, the outbreak of Covid-19 in the Indian team contingent forced the decision of calling off the Old Trafford Test.

Ind vs Eng, 5th Test cancelled: Two options in case of cancelled match

If the match is deemed by the ICC’s Dispute Resolution Committee (DRC) to have been cancelled for acceptable reasons under the COVID allowances in the ICC rules, the result will be declared null and void and the series considered a four-match affair, with India winning 2-1 and World Test Championship points awarded on a percentage of available points basis

The DRC consider India forfeited the match and award it to England, squaring the series at 2-2.
In which conditions can a team not play a match
Ind vs Eng, 5th Test cancelled: “Any matches that do not take place due to the Acceptable Non-Compliance of one or both Parties (as defined in the World Test Championship Competition Terms) shall not be taken into account in the calculation of the Points Percentage.”
The decision of DRC will depend upon how they interpret acceptable non-compliance. There are provisions within the WTC competition terms that allow a side not to play a Test if COVID impacts their ability to field aside. BCCI is confident that these provisions apply to the current situation.
Manchester Test
IND ENG Test Series – ICC to decide Winner: Harrison also made it clear that ECB do not regard the called off Test as COVID cancellation. “This is not a COVID cancellation,” Harrison said on Friday. “The match was cancelled because of serious concerns over the mental health and well-being of one of the teams and there is a difference… We have the ICC adjudicate over whether this series is completed now, whether that fifth match is null and void or whether it’s actually regarded as a forfeiture or something else.”
Dispute Resolution Committee, chaired by Michael Beloff QC will take the final call on the situation and it can not be appealed by any side.
