Ind vs Eng 1st T20: With the T20I World Cup around the corner, India’s five-match T20I series against England was supposed to be the stepping stone to begin preparations, but India’s vice-captain Rohit Sharma said that it is more important to win the series than going for dress rehearsals.

“There is no time for rehearsals. T20 World Cup is far ahead in the future and there is no point dwelling in the future. Winning the series and focusing on the present is more important,” Sharma said at a virtual press conference on Wednesday ahead of the 1st T20I against India on March 12.

While there are points to ponder for India and World No 1 in T20Is, England, would have been the perfect opponent to test combinations, Rohit believes it will be better to play well in the presence and not think too far ahead.

“No point thinking too much into the future. If you take care of the present, the future will take care of itself. There is no time to think far ahead,” Rohit added.

In this tournament, India will induct two new faces in Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav in the squad. While wicketkeeper-batsman Kishan might need to wait longer, Suryakumar could get a chance in the playing XI in the series.

But Rohit does not want to put pressure on the youngsters so soon. Instead, he said, it is important for them to settle in first and understand how things work.

“I don’t want them to be thinking too much. That will be my advice. That’s how they can improve. They can be part of the team and learn. I want them to have fun and understand how things work. They must be a little nervous and that’s natural. It is on the seniors like me to ease them into the team so that they are not under pressure,” he said.

“They are here because of their performance in the last year or so. My advice would be, carry the form since they have done so well over the past year. The situation will challenge you and you have to ready,” Rohit added.

On the long absence of the T20 World Cup, Rohit said, it is good that ICC has spaced out the premier T20I tournament.
“Look obviously if you don’t play the World Cup, you definitely miss it. But in between, we played 50 over World Cup which was in 2019. It’s for ICC to decide there can’t be too much of the World Cup also. So they have spaced it out nicely between 2016 and 2021, there was a 50-over world cup in between,” he said.

“So, it’s nice for the fans also to look forward to something because it’s not every second year you are playing the World Cup, otherwise the charm of the World Cup goes away. The freshness of the World Cup remains and it’s gonna be an exciting World Cup as it is being played in India. We are all looking forward to that but before that, we still have a lot of work to do,” he added.
