India vs England 1st Test: Joe Root is all set to join the elite club of 14 England cricketers who have played 100 Tests, making the English skipper the 15 player to achieve this massive feat when he steps out at teh MA Chidambaram stadium on Friday. However, the Yorkshire right-hand batsman will vary of R Ashwin, who could determine the outcome of the series single-handedly.
Root, who is acknowledged as the best player against spin, during the pre-match conference said it will be a battle where he need to get the better of the Indian office. “I just have to play Ashwin well. I will not look to dominate and defend. He is a fine bowler and has a great record in India. I have played against him and he has had the better of me a couple of times. This is the contest I have to get the better of. You have to play all the bowling well. Ball-by-ball mentality will help me,” Joe Root said.
The England skipper, who is in awe of Chetesteshwar Pujara’s ability to play long innings, underline the importance of the Indian batsman’s wicket and the need for batting like him during the course of the four-Test series against India.
The Rajkot-born Pujara proved to be Australia’s nemesis yet again in the recent four-match series Down Under, scoring three half-centuries but more importantly consuming over 900 balls.
