India vs England 3rd Test – Ashwin on cusp of Big Record: After a stellar all-round performance for India in the second Test, ace-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin is on the cusp of breaking yet another record. The 34-year-old is only six wickets behind to reach 400 wickets in Tests. He can become the second-fastest bowler to reach the landmark in the historic pink-ball Test at Motera Stadium, Ahmedabad.
Ashwin needs to pick the remaining wickets to go past Dale Steyn and Richard Hadlee in an elite list. The duo is currently tied at the second spot, taking 80 wickets each to reach the feat. if Ashwin joins the 400-wickets club in the Day/Night Test, he would reach the landmark in just 77 Tests.
Sri Lanka’s Muttiah Muralitharan- highest wicket-taker in Test- is on top of the list. He had reached the feat in 72 Tests.
When it comes to India’s record in Test cricket, Ashwin is only behind Anil Kumble (619), Kapil Dev (334) Harbhajan Singh (317). Overall, he will become the sixth spinner and third Indian spinner to scalp 400 wickets in Tests.
Ashwin had a fantastic display with the bat and the ball in the previous Test. He smashed his fifth Test century on a tricky Chennai pitch. He had already done the damage to visitors in the first inning with his five-wicket haul. As a result, India thrashed England by 317 runs in the second Test and level the Test series 1-1.
The next two Tests will be played at Motera Stadium, Ahmedabad. The third Test will begin on 24 February.
Ashwin can go past Lyon, Ambrose’s tally in 3rd Test
R Ashwin can also go past Nathan Lyon (399) and Curtly Ambrose (405) in the Pink-ball Test.
Besides this, the all-rounder is set to break Wasim Akram (414), Harbhajan Singh, Shaun Pollock (421), Richard Hadlee (431), Rangana Herath (433), Kapil Dev (434) and Dale Steyn (439) records in the next few Tests.
