8 Wrestlers from India got Olympic Quota place for India but after Sumit Malik was tested positive, only 7 will be seen in action at Tokyo Olympics – three male and four female wrestlers, competing at the Olympics.

All seven wrestlers will be competing in the freestyle category, as no Indian wrestler could cross the qualifying huddle for the Tokyo Olympics in the Greco-Roman category.

India at Tokyo Olympics – Indian wrestlers Tokyo Olympics

Ravi Kumar Dahiya

Ravi Kumar Dahiya will be competing in the freestyle 57kg category event. He won a bronze medal at the 2019 World Wrestling Championships in the 57kg category and qualified for the Tokyo Olympics. Recently, the 24-years-old wrestler won a gold medal at the Asian champions, and he is in good form going into the Olympics.

Bajrang Punia

Bajrang Punia will be competing in the freestyle 65kg category event. He has three World Championship medals to his name and qualified for the Olympics by winning a bronze medal at the 2019 World Wrestling Championships. The 27-years-old wrestler is expected to win a medal for India at the Tokyo Olympics.

Deepak Punia

Deepak Punia will be competing in the freestyle 86kg category event. He was the silver medallist in this category at the 2019 World wrestling Championship and secured his berth for the Olympics. He has been in great form in recent times by winning silver medal at the 2021 Asian Championships.

Seema Bisla

Deepak Punia will be competing in the women’s freestyle 50kg category event. She lost in the Asian Olympic qualification tournament, but her bronze medal win at the 2019 Asian championships secured her berth in the Tokyo Olympics.

Vinesh Phogat

Vinesh Phogat will be competing in the women’s freestyle 53kg category event at the Tokyo Olympics. She was so near and yet so far at the 2016 Olympics when she got injured and disqualified. This time around, she will be the favourite to win a medal at the Tokyo Olympics. The 26-years-old wrestler won a bronze medal at the 2019 World championships and became the first Indian wrestler to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics.

Anshu Malik

Anshu Malik will be competing in the women’s freestyle 57kg category event at the Tokyo Olympics. She is just 19-years-old, and her gold medal finish at the 2021 Asian Championships holds her in a good state for the Tokyo Olympics.

Sonam Malik

Sonam Malik will be competing in the women’s freestyle 62kg category event at the Tokyo Olympics. She has a gold medal in National games and two gold medal at the World Cadet Wrestling Championship. In 2020, she defeated 2016 Rio Olympics bronze medallist Sakshi Malik for getting selected to the Asian Olympic qualifiers tournament.

India at Tokyo Olympics – India Wrestling History at Olympics: Let’s look at five medals won by India in wrestling.

1952 Helsinki Olympics

Khashabha Dadasaheb Jadhav won a bronze medal in the men’s freestyle 57kg category event at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics. He was the first Indian to win an individual Olympic medal for independent India.

2008 Beijing Olympics

After nearly 56 years of medal drought for India in wrestling at the Olympics, Sushil Kumar broke the medal drought by winning a bronze medal in the men’s freestyle 66kg category.

2012 London Olympics

There were two medals for India at this Olympics. First, it was Yogeshwar Dutt winning a bronze in the men’s freestyle 60kg category. Then Sushil won a silver medal, making him the first Indian individual athlete to have more than one Olympic medal.

2016 Rio Olympics

India had won only two medals in this Olympics and one of them came from wrestling. Sakshi Malik won a bronze medal in the 58kg category and became the first Indian female wrestler to win an Olympic medal.
