India’s badminton queen PV Sindhu entered Quarterfinals of Tokyo Olympics in a style, winning 21-15, 21-13 against Mia Blichfeldt with complete poise and ease in just 41 minutes. Now she faces World No. 5- Japan’s Akane Yamaguchi. Yamaguchi defeated Korea’s Gaeun Kim 21-17, 21-18 to reach the quarterfinals against India’s PV Sindhu. So far, in her Tokyo Olympics campaign, Sindhu has won all her matches in straight sets. Sindhu won her last match against Yamaguchi in the All England Open 2021 where they played a nail-biter before Sindhu won, 16-21, 21-16, 21-19 and will hope for a similar result on Friday.

Anirban Lahiri made a strong start to his Olympics campaign as he overcame a difficult start to finish 8th after the end of Round 1.Fresh from a season’s best third-place outing at the 3M Open on the PGA Tour recently, Lahiri will hope to make his mark with a podium finish, after his disappointment at Rio five years ago. Compatriot Udayan Mane shot 76 to finish the day at 60th, and he will be looking for a major improvement when he steps onto the court on Friday.

Archery: 6:00 AM- Women’s 1/8 eliminations: Deepika Kumari vs Ksenia Perova

Deepika Kumari stormed into the round of 16 on the back of impressive wins over USA’s Jennifer Mucino-Fernandez and Bhutan’s Karma on Wednesday. The World No.1 Archer will now take on Russian Olympic Committee’s Ksenia Perova and remains one of India’s biggest medal hopes at the Olympics. Kumari has struggled for consistency throughout the Olympics but will hope to reach the quarters when she takes the field on Friday.

Nethra Kumanan will be in action during the Women’s Laser Radial Race 9 and Race 10 on Friday. The Indian Sailor, making her Olympics Debut, has failed to make a mark, and a top 10 finish is out of bounds for the 23-year-old. She, however, showed great signs of improvement on Thursday, finishing 22nd and 20th in races seven and eight. She had made it to 15th and 17th in races 2 and 3 but has seen a downward slope since, before a respectable finish on Thursday.

Vishnu Saravanan is also out of contention for a top 10 finish, as the 22-year-old occupies the 23rd overall spot heading into the final two races. Saravanan had a rather underwhelming set of results on Thursday, recording his worst finish during the games, finishing 27th in Race 7, followed by 23rd finish in Race 8.

Indian sailing pair KC Ganapathy and Varun Thakkar put in a creditable performance on Thursday but still remain at the bottom of the standings. The duo finished a creditable seventh in one of the two races in men’s skiff 49er on Thursday. Ganapathy and Thakkar ended at 16th in Race 5 before pulling off a seventh-place finish in the next to occupy 17th place out of 19 competitors with 76 net points.

Hockey

8:15 AM- India vs Ireland- Women’s Pool A

India Women have struggled in Tokyo so far but will have an outside chance to make it to the knockouts when they take on Ireland in their penultimate Pool A match. Team India will have to clinch a win over Ireland to have a chance to make it to the next round, and a failure to do so against the World No.9 ranked side would seal a group stage exit.

In what is essentially a dead rubber, India will play Japan in their final Pool A game in Tokyo. An excellent performance against Argentina gave the Indian men’s hockey team a place in the quarterfinals, where they score 2 late goals to clinch the tie. Meanwhile, the Japanese team has not won a single match in Pool A and India will be looking for an easy win. Regardless of the result, India will remain No.2 in the group, behind Australia.

With Mary Kom’s journey at the Olympics coming to an end, Simranjeet Kaur will be hoping to carry the legendary boxer’s legacy when she takes the ring on Friday. Kaur will face off against Thailand’s Sudaporn Seesondee and will aim to at least make it to the quarter-finals in her maiden Olympics appearance. She won the silver at the Asian boxing Olympic qualifiers in Amman, Jordan in the lightweight category, and will have her sights set on a podium finish in Tokyo.

8:48 AM-Women’s Welter (64-69kg) Quarterfinal 2, Chen-Nien Chin TPE v. Lolvina Boroghain IND

Lolvina Boroghain is one step away from ensuring a podium finish as she takes on Chinese Taipei’s Chen-Nien Chin in the Women’s welterweight quarterfinals. Making her debut appearance at the Olympics, Boroghain defeated 35-year-old German Nadine Apetz in a closely-fought last-16 bout, claim all three rounds via split decision. However, she will face a tough test, with Chen No.2 in the 69kg category.
